Using page numbers and headers together in 07

ehm1217

When I add page numbers to the top of the page and then add a header, the
header blows out the page numbers and vice versa. Can anybody give me the
simple steps (if there are any) for using page numbers within headers in Word
2007? I tried Microsoft help but I don't have the time to sit through the
50-MINUTE (no kidding) demonsration on headers that was offered in reply to
my question.

What happened to the little insert page # icon that was easily found in
previous versions?

Insert the header you want. Move the cursor to the position where the page
number should go (type a tab character or two if needed to get there). Then
click Page Number > Current Position and choose the page number style you
want.

The "Top of page", "Bottom of page", and "Page margins" choices all lead to
Quick Parts that will replace any existing items in the header, footer, or
margin. Only the "Current position" choice adds the page number to the
existing text.

The page # icon you remember is gone, replaced by the more complicated Page
Number button on the Insert ribbon (and repeated on the Header & Footer
Tools ribbon). However, all the old icon ever did was insert a {PAGE} field,
which you can do yourself.
