Using "Page X of Y" section numbering while retaining "absolute" document numbering

Hi all:

Using Word 2000 to produce quality assurance manuals, which require a
header that lists "Page X of Y" for each independent section. Easy to
do using a {sectionpages} field, and making sure each section restarts
page numbering at 1. Problem occurs when requiring "absolute" page
numbers printed in the footer of the manual, which is comprised of
several sections. Second problem is generating a ToC that refers to
the "absolute" page numbers that refers to a topic on page so-and-so...
Tried to figure out a way using the {numpages} field to make this
work, but couldn't. Any ideas? Sorry in advance if this has been
covered already (I really did read the FAQs!), and thanks in advance
for any help.

You will need to insert a bookmark at the end of each Section and (instead
of setting the page numbers for each Section to start at 1), leave them set
to be continuous and in Section 2 use the following field construction for
the page number where Section1 is the bookmark name assigned to the bookmark
at the end of Section 1

{ = { PAGE } - { PAGEREF Section1 }} of { SECTIONPAGES }

Similarly for the balance of the Sections in the document.

Doug:

Thank you very much. I found an old solution you had provided in May
2004, I believe. There, you had the "absolute" page number generated
using a formula, here, you use the a formula for the "Page X of Y"
portion. Well done, I'll try it. (If successful, I'll make a template
out of the structure so as to not give myself grief months/years from
now...)

Thanks so very much.

Hi Kevin

The key point to remember is that the TOC and other built-in references to
page numbers always use the number (and format) defined by the standard page
number field. So you always need to use {PAGE} for the referenced number
(changing format, start number etc. as necessary through the dialog) and the
calculated numbers for non-referenced page numbers.
