Using Percent Work Complete to Update Finish Dates

How do I use Percent Work Complete to update finish dates or otherwise
highlight when a task is behind schedule? For instance if a task will take
40hrs and the percent work complete is 10% and the task is due to tomorrow,
how do I highlight that and or update the finish date to reflect the current
burn/completion rate? I am looking for a discrete measure to know whether or
not we are on target. I am also looking for a quick way to adjust completion
dates when necessary.

BTW. I am a novice user who finds Project rather mystifying.

You would put in that the actual work is 4 hours, that's 10% of 40 hours and
10% Work Complete means that you've done 10% of the scheduled work. If that
took place at the scheduled start date go to the next step. If it was
something other than the orignally scheduled start date, enter the date it
was begun in the Actual Start field. You'll see part of the duration is
marked complete. Now use the "Reschedule uncompleted work" tool in the
Tools, Tracking menu to move the portions of that task that should have been
done before today forward to the earliest date you figure that work on it
can resume.
