Using Project Server with Fixed Duration tasks

Byron

Our organization does task estimation by duration, but when updating the
tasks using Project Server the schedule changes to accomodate the fixed
duration setting. We could use fixed work or fixed units, but we would like
to maintain the original task duration. Do you know of any solutions other
organizations have used as a work around?

Maybe this will get you what you want:

Tools > Options > Calculation
check the box: "Edits to total task % complete will be spread to the status
date"

With this option selected, work not done one day will be spread to the
remaining days scheduled for the task. If there are no remianing days, then
you will receive a warning that the resource will be scheduled to work
outside of the scheduled duration of the task.

In essence, you're asking how to stop your scheduling tool from scheduling.
The easiest workaround is to use Excel, rather than project. If you're going
to work with Project, you must contend with work, durations and units. You
pick two, the software calculates the third. So, if you want to fix the
durations, you need to manage either units or work values, or both to
achieve the results you want..

If you ask any follow-up questions, it would be very helpful to know what
tracking method you're using.
