Using Publisher with smartFTP

Hello all,
I am a total newbie with web design (like I actually started this
morning). I have my first web page up which I made using Microsoft
Publisher. I uploaded it using smartFTP. There are three pages to my
site, and only the first one shows up on the web. When I click on the
link to reach the other pages, I get a page unavailable error. Is
there a configuration setting I am not using properly?

Assuming that you are using Pub 2003 at the default settings, then when you
Publish to the Web to produce your HTML output, you will get an "index.htm"
file, and a "index_files" folder. Sounds like you did not upload the
"index_files" folder which contains your other pages and supporting
graphics.

Thanks. I am quite new at this and I didn't know that Publisher
could directly publish to the web. So I was saving my index files to a
local folder and then using smartFTP to upload them to my url. It
works either way, but it is much easier using the publisher option.

Andrew,

Be sure to use Publish to the Web vs. File, Save as a web page with Pub
2003. (In Pub 2000 and 2002 this is different) You do not want to upload the
results of Save As a web page...it is a very bloated HTML code, where the
Publish to the Web HTML is filtered. You can always Publish to the Web to
your host, or to your computer where you will have the opportunity to study
the output files, before you upload them. Whatever works...

And since you are just starting, be sure to go to Tools > Options > Web tab
and uncheck "Rely on VML...", "Allow PNG...". This will also help produce
faster loading pages.

And finally, large pictures can increase loading time, so ideally resize and
optimize your images before you insert them into your Pub file, or at the
minimum compress them. Read: Compress graphics file sizes to create smaller
Publisher Web pages:
