Using references to multiple figures

S

Steve

I am using Word 2000 with Win2000.

I often need to refer to a series of figures or tables in
a document. However, I haven't been able to "figure" out
how to refer to a figure by number alone. The result is a
line of "Please refer to Figure X, Figure Y, and Figure Z"
instead of "Please refer to Figures X-Z"

I've gotten around this historically by abandoning cross-
references, but I've finally decided that I should ask
instead of using a stopgap solution.

Is there a way to refer to a figure by number alone (i.e.
without "Figure" label?

TIA,
Steve

It's fiddly, but it can be done. You have to insert the cross-references in
their full form first because inserting the cross-reference is what creates
the bookmark in the caption. So:

1. Type "Please refer to figures Figure X-Figure Z" ("Figure X" and "Figure
Z" being cross-references).

2. Go to the caption for Figure X and select just the number.

3. Go to Insert | Bookmark, check the box for "Hidden bookmarks," and select
the radio button for "Location."

4. The bookmark that is selected will be the one for Figure X. Press Add.
The bookmark will now be around just the number.

5. Repeat for Figure Z, then select the two cross-references and F9 to
update the fields.
