using speech in Word - unbale to get Word to accept the mic

I have tried several times to dictate in Word using speech recognition of my
words dictated into a microphone. I used the control panel to check
everything was working and it came up with a good reading. But Word will not
register my request on the tools drop-down menu and my dictation does not
appear on the document. What can I do?

What version of Word and Windows?

What language & locale are you using in Windows regional setting and what default editing language for the text in Word?
