Using SSL and Outlook 2002

I recently (late March 2008) got multiple emails (about one daily) from AT&T
Yahoo telling me that I had to enable SSL in Outlook 2002 as not using it was
a security threat. I was having no issues receiving or sending mail. I'm
using Windows XP. I followed the instructions AT&T Yahoo provided in a link,
including changing the ports and clicking on the SSL checkboxes, but then
received "Unable to logon to incoming mail server (POP3). Unable to logon
onto outgoing mail server (SMTP)." errors. I did a "chat" with the AT&T
technician but he just ran me through the same script and was unable to help.
When I reversed the changes and went back to the old ports, email worked
again. Automatic Updates had already installed SP3, which was one of AT&T
Yahoo's suggested "fixes" for Outlook 2002 issues. Any suggestions on how to
get SSL working on Outlook 2002?

What ports did AT&T/Yahoo ask you to use? Reason I ask is that even Outlook
2003 has known issues with SSL/TLS and non-standard SMTP port numbers like
587. (Outlook 2003's didn't get fixed until SP1 + hotfix or just go
straight to Office 2003 SP2.)

Just so you know, Outlook should work if the SMTP port is 25 or 465.

I changed my SMTP port to 465 and my POP3 port to 995 per AT&T's
instructions. But when I do, I can't send or receive emails. Changing it
back to the default settings and turning off SSL allows it to work again.
AT&T was not helpful in resolving this issue.

If it were I, I'd bug 'em until the issue is resolved.
