Using Tab and Shift Tab keys to promote and demote custom outlines

I'm working in Word 2003. I've progammatically built all our custom
outline numbering schemes on styles other then Headings 1-9. Is there
any way to make the Tab and Shift Tab keys work to promote and demote
the levels?

Tools>AutoCorrect Options>AutoFormat As You Type and check "Set left and
first indent with tabs and backspaces"
