using tab for signature line

I use leader and tab stops for signature lines in documents. However, it
seems the line falls a bit short at the beginning of the line. So the text
is at the margin and the line begins in the middle of the first letter in the
line.

Because underline leaders are created using the underline character, their
length is always a multiple of the width of that character. They align well
at the tab stop end (as you've observed) but not dependably at the
beginning. If you want more predictable alignment, you can use any sort of
tab stop and apply the Underline property to the tab character itself. Note,
however, that this will produce a different line weight that will not match
any blanks you have created using underline characters (but it will match
underlined text or spaces).

I'm not sure why this has just begun happening all the time - it used to be
infrequently. I don't know if I explained myself completely, but I am settin
the tab stop from the left margin to 3" on the ruler. There is nothing else
on the line. Howver, when I return to enter "signature" the leader line does
not begin completely at the left margin. This is also the case if I set
another tab for the "date" at, say 3.5 to 5" - the line leader does not begin
directly above the "D".

And, maybe your answer is the same - I just wanted to ensure I had explained
the situation correctly as it has not always been this way...

Thank you.
