Using templates for new documents

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

I have been trying to use templates to save me from copying headers and footers all the time. However, when I open a template (*.dot) and then type in it, it willnot allow me to save it as a document. "You cannot save a template file to a non-template form. I believe that is the way I used to do it on my PC.

What am I missing to be able to use my templates.

In Word 2004 (this has changed in 2008), you *must* use the Project Gallery
(from the File menu) to open a new document based on a template. Otherwise
you will just open the template itself, as you've discovered.
