Using text boxes and check boxes in the same document

I am creating a funding application form that customers
can download (as a Word doc) from our website, fill in on-
screen and email back to us.
The document contains text boxes for info such as contact
details, outline of funding proposal etc. The second
section (on page 2) contains a list of questions with
check boxes (which are forms). To activate those check
boxes the document must be protected. When I activate this
function in the appropriate section the text boxes become
defunct.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can amend this?

Are you using text form fields (from the Forms toolbar)? If so, they should
be accessible when the document is protected.
