How to you place a caret over the letter "i" in the words "maitre de"?

You don't. You put a circumflex accent.

The keyboard shortcuts for the French accents are very simple. Type
Ctrl- and the closest-looking punctuation mark, and then the letter it
applies to.

For circumflex, it's Ctrl-Shift-^

For acute, it's Ctrl-apostrophe

For grave, it's Ctrl-`

For tilde, it's Ctrl-Shift-

For cedilla, it's Ctrl-comma

For dieresis, it's Ctrl-Shift-colon

And to add a further correction, it isn't "de" -- see

The maître d' (short for maître d'hôtel, literally "master of the hotel")

Thanks Jay. It took several times to get it right, but I now know how to do
it. I would have understood the directions easier if it would have stated:

Hold ctrl- down, shift-^, release shift, then strike the letter it applies
to, release ctrl-.

Unfortunately, grammatim assumed that you knew how to use keyboard shortcuts
using "setup keys." In fact, the correct instructions are:

Press Ctrl+^ (that is, Ctrl+Shift+6 on U.S. keyboards) and release all keys.
Then type the letter, with or without Shift depending on whether you want
uppercase or lowercase. (If you continue to hold the Ctrl key down, you may
get very unexpected results.)
