Using the right accounts

Hi All,

I am totally confused about which accounts to use to perform a project
server install and to perform a backup and restore. I have read through
the Installation and Disaster Recovery guides, and while these make a
mention about the different accounts that need to be created, they dont
mention how these accounts are to be used.

I am trying to develope some guidance around installation and
operations, so an help would be very much welcomed.

I think you need to separate your questions about backup and restore from
installation. There are a variety of accounts as well. Which specific ones
are you confused about? If you're looking for guidance, on these as it
relates to installation, use the Installation guide as a reference.

Hi Gary,

I have read the installation guide cover to cover and while I will not
claim that this guide is entirely useless, it is confusing enough to
cause a definable degree of frustration.

The guide refers to four main accounts;

- Project Server Administrator (ProjAdmin)
- SQL Administrator (SQLAdmin) <- SQL based account
- Sharepoint Administrator (WSSAdmin)
- OLAP Administrator (OLAPAdmin)

The accounts in the parenthesis are the ones I created for my install.
Then there are of course the regular local Administrator account and
the SA account for which you must supply a password when installing
SQL. My question relates to how these accounts are actually used. At
what point during the install, setup or operations (or even regular
use) should these accounts be used?? Also, while the guide does elude
to what group membership these accounts should use, it is still rather
confusing. So...what groups should these accounts be members of??

I also have a number of questions around backup and restore, but I may
ask these in another post. Since we are on the topic of accounts
though, how are the above accounts (or any others for that matter) used
during backup and restore??

Thanks in advance.....

Brant:
- Project Server Administrator (ProjAdmin) - The built-in Project Server
administrator account is a Project Server authenticated account that gets
created by the installation routine. "Administrator" is the account you
use to logon to Project Server for the first time
- SQL Administrator (SQLAdmin) <- SQL based account - This can be the SA
account or an account that has SQL admin rights. Used during installation
to create the scripts. This can be a SQL or Windows account.
- Sharepoint Administrator (WSSAdmin) - The identity used for COM+ to
integrate Project Server with WSS. This can be a local account if SQL, WSS
and Project Server are on the same box, it should be a domain account when
installing on multiple boxes.
- OLAP Administrator (OLAPAdmin) - COM+ identity for integrating with
Analysis Services, the conditions apply as the WSS account above.

Hi Gary,

I appreciate your explaination of these accounts. I had actually gained
an understanding of what these accounts were intended for, but I still
dont understand at what points in the installation these accounts
SHOULD be used. For every install I have performed, I have used the
local Administrator account. This seems to have worked fine, but I am
still curious about the other accounts.

Also, the Project Server Administrator account that I mention above...I
dont belive this account is created automatically. During the install,
one of the instructions is to create this account.

One of the instructions is to enter a "password" for this account. The
account *is* created automatically.
