Using Word 2003 Protect Document on Word 2002 protected documents.

I have several documents that were created in Word 2002 that I have applied
Protect Document to in the 2002 version. When I open the documents in Word
2003 and unprotect them I cannot access the Protect Documents options in Word
2003. The Protect Document box comes up and the options are visible, but
they are faded and do not allow me to access them. I have to cut and paste
to an entirely new document to be able to access the Protect Document options.
Any suggestions? I have over 1,000 documents that I need to be able to
access and reapply document protection.
