Using Word as the primary message editor causes Outlook to freeze during message composition

I have a user who is using a new machine (XP SP2 - all up-to-date),
with:
- Office 2003 Standard Edition

=====================PROBLEM======================
When using Word 2003 as an editor to compose messages Outlook will
freeze when trying to utilize the Global Address List. The "To" field
GAL works without problems, it is only when the GAL is clicked
directly in the message the Outlook client will freeze (have to end
task to kill message composition)

==============TROUBLESHOOTING DONE================
1. Completely re-installed office 2003 standard to office 2003 pro
(completely un-installed prior to new install)
2. re-named the normal.dot file
3. unchecked word as editor option and confirmed where the problem
resides
4. un-installed office 2003 pro
5. installed office 2003 standard
