Using your mouse in word

I can use my mouse only when selecting menu functions (ribbon functions).
When I try to right click to cut, paste, etc within a document, it does not
work. I have to use keyboard functions. How do I reset this so that I can
use my mouse for editing my documents?

If you right-click, you should see "context menus."

Selecting text is done with ordinary left-clicking.
