Usung 'backspace' key in Word

I'm using Office 2007. Whenever I use the backspace key in Word the size of
the font to the left of the cursor is reduced. I guess this is a feature
(but, for what purpose?). How can I turn it off?

Probably you are backspacing over a paragraph marker and deleting it so that
the previous now loses its formatting. Check the styles of the paragraphs.

Backspacing over a paragraph marker is not the cause. If I backspace over a
character within a word, the text to the left is reduced in size. I've looked
around Word for options that might be related to this but with no success.
Nor do Styles seem to have any features that might cause this.
Any further ideas?

If you backspace over a character in the middle of a paragraph, how many
characters are reduced in size?

Are you sure this is really happening i.e. if you print it out is the
printed output confirming what you see. This sounds so bizarre that I'd
suspect a graphics driver problem - possibly the printer driver.

If I open a new document based on "blank document" the problem does not
arise. It does arise if I select one of my own templates. If I create a new
document and type "Hi There. This is Nigel," and then click between the g and
e, then backspace, the whole line reduces in font size by 1 (from 11 to 10).
The size shown in the font size box remains at 11 and only changes when I
click on the text again. One thing I have noticed is that the styles display
has no style higlighted (whereas when starting with "Blank Doc" the Normal
style is highlighted. The change in size is reflected on a printed sheet.

Having investigated further, it seems to happen with one particular template.

That really is bizarre and I guess the template must be corrupt. You could
either recreate it from scratch or try one of the quick methods of
eliminating the corruption. The easiest to try is to open the template and
save it as HTML. Close it, reopen it and then use SaveAs to get return it to
a standard .dot.

Have you tried turning on the Show/Hide so you can see when you're about
to Backspace into a Paragraph mark.

Yes. It is not a problem with Show / Hide.

I've found that when I backspace over a character within a line the
formatting of the line to the left of the character deleted becomes that of
the format on which the original format is based.

Still unresolved.

Are you saying that Backspace is returning your text to the default
paragraph font (like Ctrl+Spacebar)?

No, it's not acting like ctrl+spacebar. You do not select any text but just
move the insertion bar into the text and then backspace - just as you might
if a character has been typed incorrectly.
However, I have decided to recreat the template.

I don't think you can assign backspace as a keyboard shortcut (without ctrl
or shift etc).
