v.X graphics display cropped in 2004

We have recently been aggressively upgrading people from Jaguar to
Panther and v.X to 2004. Users are finding Word docs that display a
graphic correctly on v.X will only show a portion on 2004. If for
example the graphic may have been scaled down 75% it will show the
graphic at 100% with the extra cropped. Saving the graphic from 04
yields the cropped version with the extra parts lost. Also, the graphic
cannot be resized without hand entering the values to do so (drag
resizing is unavailable as is drag moving). I am not seeing a
"converting metafile" dialog when these files are opened and I wonder
if this is part of the problem. I can carry the file to other Macs and
the problem follows and I can cut/paste the graphic to a new file and
all I get is the cropped version of the graphic. If I edit the graphic
all I see is the cropped version. It appears these files probably
originated on a PC.

Apparently users are seeing similar issues with Powerpoint 2004.

This sounds like it might be another twist on the many problems people
are having with picture handling / layering in Word X. The problem shows
up when a Word X document is opened with Word 2004. It might be a good
idea to export the picture from Word X, if possible, and then import it
anew into Word 2004. This might avoid the problem.

On the whole I have found that it is a bad idea to be overly
"aggressive" about getting rid of your copy of Word X. There are certain
things that can't be done without it (such as building a Table of
Contents). m.

Hi Matt:

"aggressive" about getting rid of your copy of Word X. There are certain

Contents). m.

Was this a mis-type? What's this in my document, then? Looks remarkably
like a Table of Contents to me, and I just built it in Word 2004.

I think it *is* fair to warn users that document elements will move around
slightly in the conversion from Word X to Word 2004, due to the new
Unicode-capable Apple text engine that Word 2004 switched to.

And I think it is fair to say that Word 2004 needs a more powerful computer
with more memory to match Word X's speed, again because ATSUI is very
power-hungry. Users with documents less than about 200 pages will probably
not notice much difference, but longer documents and complex documents do
slow down a bit.

But I am not aware of anything that Word 2004 "can't" do that Word X can.

You must know something I don't :)

Cheers
