"Valid Short File Name"

B

Bobbee

Since yesterday, every time I try to save a 2003 file to 2007, I get an
error. It reads,

"Cannot save the file. "CoachingServices.docx is not a valid short file
name (Maximum 8 characters plus a 3 character file extension name). Type a
valid file name and then save the file again."

There must be a setting somewhere that I changed, but I cannot find it. Help!

Is this happening only in Word, or for all programs? (Try to save a file
with a long name in Notepad to check.)

If it's for all programs, you may have an incorrectly set item in the
registry. The article at
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/01/27/362049.aspx tells you
which value to look for, using the registry editor (regedit.exe). If you
need instructions for using the registry editor, read

Start Word in Safe Mode and test. From Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word will now be in safe mode. create a short test page and
see if you can save it with a long filename now.

An update for anyone who might run across this problem:

"Convert" works to save it to 2007
