Validation and Ctrl button conflict

I'm getting the strangest thing happening on a workbook.
In a worksheet, I have a 12 Ctrl buttons (one for each month).
Below them I have some data and below that a cell with Data validation in
the form of a list with dropdown selected that chooses one of the months.
For some reason, when I select that cell (with the data validation)....

1. The dropdown arrow appears within the cell outline (whereas normally it
appears on the right side, outside the cell outline),

2. One of the buttons is taken from where it normally resides and fills that
cell area (and the button size is reduced to the height of the row). As
soon as I exit that cell, the button disappears but does not return to its
proper position.

3. If I click on that button (now in that cell area), it behaves just like
the real button and covers the whole cell including the dropdown arrow.
I can drag the button away from the cell, in edit mode, but as soon as I
click in that cell again it magically repositions itself back there.

4. The Dropdown arrow never disappears. Only way to delete it is to delete
the entire row or cell using Edit/delete.

5. If I save the file and reopen it after trying to fix this, it causes an
Excel meltdown. After the meltdown I can no longer open the file without
another meltdown. That is, the file is no longer usable and have to go back
to an earlier version (on which I have duplicated the same problem).
6. If I copy the sheet to another new workbook, there seems to be no such
problems.

Any clues anyone?
