validation drop down disappeared

I'm working on a spreadsheet with list validations on some cells. I di
some "record"-style macros to export to another file withou
formatting. Now the down-arrow and drop-down list are missing from m
validated cells - even though the validation process is still active.

What happened and how do I change it back?

Select the cell with validation and see if the check mark from [in cell
dropdown] has been removed

I also believe that there is a bug in excel97 that will remove the dropdown
if the validation is in the freezed panes (left or above) (windows>freeze
pane)
