Value recognition

I am using the sumif function to add some values in my spreadsheet.
Their are a number of codes with numerical values attached to them.
e.g.,

D1 08
D7 10
D4 05
D12 11

I might have the formula sum all the values for the codes less than
D5. The problem I have is when the formula sees D12 for eg., it reads
it as D1, how do I rectify that?

=SUMPRODUCT((MID(A1:A4,2,255)*1<5)*(B1:B4))
