Variable field

Hello,

I have to print a large number of copies of a 1-page document in word 2000.
Into the document I need a 17 digit serial number, whose 17th digit is a
modulo 10 check digit.
Should I set up an excel table with those serial? And, if yes, how can I
connect it to word? I've never done it.

Can anybody help, please?

thanks,

G

17 digits may be fun to achieve in a single field, but you should
investigate the techniques used for numbering documents suggested at
http://www.gmayor.dsl.pipex.com/Numbered_labels.htm
You should also see
http://www.gmayor.dsl.pipex.com/formatting_word_fields.htm in respect of
long numbers.

thanks, Graham.
here's what I did, to train:
I create an excel worksheet, 1 column only with numbers from1 to 30.
I create a word document, choosed Tools/Merge and specified the excel file
as data source.
In this way I get 30 labels in some pages.
The problem is that I don't want labels. I want to add a serial number in a
certain position in my word document and then simply print many copies of
that just specifying Print Pages From ... To ... (and making the serials
From ... To ... to appear one in each page.)
So one record from data source, one word page.
Is there a way to do that?

thanks

Yes, just choose a Letter merge instead of Labels.

And remember that each "letter" is a section, so you'll need to print s#-s#
instead of using page numbers.
