variable space width on screen

Hi, Word X is driving me nuts with a very simple thing - on screen,
the spaces between words are displayed as extremely variable in
length, so that sometimes it looks like there's no space at all
between two words when there is one, and sometimes it looks like
there's two spaces or even three when there's really only one. Zooming
in a lot helps, but I don't want to have to zoom in a ton just to be
able to look at the spaces. Turning off quartz text smoothing doesn't
help and changing fonts doesn't help. Is there a fix for this? I've
poked around in the Preferences and the Help and all, but didn't see
anything. This problem appeared with Word X; it wasn't an issue in
earlier versions of Word. I am running OSX 10.2.6 (on three different
Macs) and I've run all Microsoft's Word X updaters. My other Mac
friends are also complaining about this.
thank you, Kathleen
