various browser compatibility-autoshapes

I've completed my site (haven't published it yet) and when I preview it in
Mozilla/Opera/Netscape, it doesn't play nice. Sometimes the autoshaps show
up fine (which I've used for the page banner and backgrounds for table menu
items) while other times when I preview, they "detach" themselves from the
layers they are in and appear on the other side of the screen. I'm not sure
why this is happening. If it were a consistent problem, it may be easier to
fix. Has anyone experienced this, or know of a quick fix? If not, I suppose
I can just delete all of the autoshapes and use a solid color...I'd hate to
do that though. I really like the gradient look. Thanks!

Autoshapes are a bad idea. They're really only supported by IE. If you
know that you will have visitors using other types of browsers (Kudos to you
for testing in Moz/Opera/NS, by the way!), then you're best bet is to avoid
them entirely.

Instead, create images in an external image editing program, such as
Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Paint Shop Pro, (heck, even MS Paint if
you're in a bind...), import them into your website and place them on the
page.

I figured that's what I was going to hear. Well, I guess you learn by
screwing up a million times

I don't know that people will be using the other browsers for sure, but I'd
like to be compatible nonetheless...I'd rather not assume that all of our
visitors are using IE.

Unfortunately, my experience with graphics is minimal. I'll give it a try.
If I can't figure it out I suppose I'll just have to live with boring, flat
colors...

While that's encouraging (since I REALLY don't want to change everything, and
Opera is not cooperating with any of my changes), I just don't know...I mean,
if you were using another browser, wouldn't you be thoroughly annoyed if the
page wasn't compatible?

So if one wanted to learn more about compatibility/accessibility (to avoid
finding out that what you've done won't work AFTER you've spent hours
creating it) where would one go?

in FrontPage 2003 there's a compatibility feature.
but it just seems like you hit all the incompatible stuff first. ;-)
a good way to start IMHO for a new and inexperienced person is to go to a
place like www.pixelmill.com or do a google search for FrontPage templates
and use one. you'll learn a lot of tricks quickly by simply editing and
manipulating the pre-made template.
Most of the templates around $50 or so, and some that are cheaper, have what
would be the equivalent of thousands of dollars worth of work if it were
done as a custom "one-off" site so they're a great value.

gradients for you in Photoshop.

I think it's pretty simple (just not simple for me). I was using the RGB 0
51 102 and in Frontpage used the one color fill effects. I chose "Diagonal
Up" and set the color 4 clicks away from Light. Hope that makes some
sense...If you can help, I'd really appreciate!

Need a bit more precise info. It sounds like you're saying that one color has RGB
settings of 0, 51, and 102. So far so good. Can you give me the same type of value of
the other color? Also, what size do you want the graphic to be?
