Vcards as msg files

M

Mark

I just changed jobs and brought my vcards with me. Unfortunately the
files somehow changed to .msg files. Does anyone know how to
successfully change back to vcards so I can view? I tried to "save as"
a .vcf file and also to drag and drop inside outlook to no avail. Any
help would be appreciated.

Version of Outlook?
How did you save them?
Why doesn't Save As vcf work? To what format is it stored then?

Not sure of version. I simply saved by dragging the .vcf files to a
folder and then transferred to a flash drive. When I opened at new
job, the files opened as .msg.

How were the vcf-files created and where were these located.
File types simply don't change automagically ;-)

Again;

I suspect that no .vcf files ever existed and that Mark dragged the contacts stored in his Outlook folders.

Vcf's were created inside outlook and stored in the program as a
contact - nothing special there. Save as VCF doesn't work b/c I can't
open the file without an error (also save as is not an option when I
right click). The stored format is .msg I guess, just can't do
anything with it.

Does that mean I am out of luck? Hard to believe since I have all
these names stuck in .msg files. Is there just no info stored inside
the file?

S

Sue Mosher [MVP-Outlook]

Outlook doesn't store contacts as .vcf files. If you never created any such files, none every existed.

Dragging a contact from your Contacts folder to your hard drive always creates an .msg file, but it should be usable in Outlook. You do have Outlook installed on this machine, right?

That means that you need to have Outlook installed in order to open them.
The information would still be there.

Outlook doesn't store in vcf-format. It stores it as msg-format. Save as
vcf-file is only available from within Outlook.

Tools | Folder Options | File Types | Advanced The application for the Open action should be:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE" /f "%1"

or whatever your path to Outlook.exe is, and the action should use DDE.

My action shows same except "OFFICE10", not "OFFICE11".

Where does that leave me? And BTW, thanks for your help and patience!!

NOthing in your description of the problem suggests a known cause. The one known scenario when an .msg will show a message instead of a contact is if a contact was forwarded in an HTML or plain text message, not an RTF message. But that's not what you did, is it?

I'm sorry, but I'm stumped at this point.
