VCS opens as HTML instead

We have a website that is used to send calendar appointments which have *.vcs
links in them (not the usual VCS file in email but small "Add to calendar"
link, for some reason on some computers the email with the vcs icon link
comes through as an html and not *.vcs like it should be. So when you click
on the vcs link in the email it opens up in internet explorer with html code
instead of opening up as calendar appt in Outlook as it should. Looked in
file types and vcs association is correct. Just found out today that if you
use Firefox it works but we don't support firefox so need it working in
Internet Explorer Ideas?

I forgot to say that this is with Outlook 2003, had no problems on Outlook
2000 at all, once upgraded this broke. Thanks.

This is a huge shot in the dark but check the registry at this point:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type

See if there's a key for text/calendar and/or text/x-vcalendar

Thanks for the suggestion, the text/calendar had a .ics in there and there
was no text/x-vcalendar. I added these and tried and it still didn't make a
difference. Hmmmm.

Did you make the extension for x-vcalendar be vcs? Also, try setting the
ContentType value here to text/x-vcalendar:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.vcs

Unfortunately that didn't work either. Yes I made the extension for
x-vcalendar as .vcs. Then tried your other HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.vcs suggestion
and that didn't work.

Hmmm, I'm coming up empty at the moment but I'll keep searching.

hi! I had a similiar problem as a .vcs file did not open correctly in
Outlook as it was opened through firefox/ns7.2. With IE it worked
though. I resolved this by adding to the IIS's mime type the following
association: .vcs application/vcs.ms-outlook . The mime type forces the
client to open the file in the application set as default.

Hope this helps
