I'm using Office 2003 Pro on Win XP Pro SP2. I recently installed a version
of Windows XP SP2. I had an adventuresome road getting BCM associated with
Outlook, and I had to overcome some setup errors. Then I believe I
installed all the updates (and have them in my downloads folder but no view
will confirm if they are actually installed). Add/Remove is no help
because under MOS 2003 it lists two items:
One is called "Update" with no size or other information. When you click
on it in Add/Remove you find out it can't be removed and you get handy
support information which is an "Update ID":
FC9622F8-9F2A-48C4-9134-0534789AED69. That's all it tells you--no size--no
name--no nothin'.
The other update tells me it was installed today--so I know it is the Excel
Update I just installed. The Powerpoint add in is (surprise!! actually
labled what it is "Presentation Broadcast") but that takes all the fun out
of the guesswork. I know why items that have no lable have no
label--because MSFT thinks that is fun.
I wanted to verify that I have the Office Critical Update KB28041
installed. I think I installed it, but did a reinstall from Add/Remove
because I was having trouble getting the Excel Update in. After the
"reinstall"--I didn't choose detect and repair, everything seemed to be
working, so I set about installing all the updates available. The Excel
Update went in fine this time. When I tried to install the Office update
mentioned, it said "the expected version of this product was not found on
your system." This could mean that it's already in--but something along the
lines "it's already in" would have been more explicit.
I searched for the KB in the registry, and was led to
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1708537768-746137067-1060284298-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\*
The reg key "open folder" designation on the left pane is * and the D_Word
value on the right pane is "b". When I right click "b" to modify it what I
see in the value data is E:\Downloads\Office2003-kb828041-client-enu.exe.
It would seem I have a match.
Does this confirm I have it installed? Does anyone know what that Update
ID # means and if there is some where I can go to use it as verification? I
can't think of any other reason a search would lead me there, and is there
any convenient place in the registry where all the Office updates are
locates. I have found a few keys in the past for verifying OS hotfixes.
Thanks much,
Chad Harris
