Verifying patch packages for Office Professional XP ?

I tried to re-install office professional XP and I keep getting this message:
"This patch could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and
that you can access it or contact the application vendor to verify that this
is a valid Windows Installer patch package". I checked with the IT people at
the college that I purchased this from and it is an original from Microsoft.
I can not update online for the same reason. Please help!!!!
