Version Confusion

Karen

I created a file in Project 2003, my co-worker has
Project 2000. She was unable to open the file I created.

The message is: Microsoft Project cannot open the file.
Try one of the following: Check that the file's name and
path are correct. Check that the file is in a format
recognized by Microsoft Project. Microsoft Project files
(.mpp) from a version earlier than Microsoft Project 98
cannot be opened.

The path is correct and the file is in a format
recognized by Project.

So, I did a "save as" and saved my 2003 file as a Project
98 file and my coworker was able to open the file. From
what I have read in the help file - and I quote
Microsoft: "The project files you create using Microsoft
Office Project 2003, Microsoft Project 2002, or Microsoft
Project 2000 can be opened using any of those versions of
Project. The files are automatically converted to the
appropriate format when they are opened."

Does anyone know what is happening? Also, when I do
the "save as" and save it as a 98 format, I get a
message: The file may contain feutures that are not
compatible with the Microsoft Project 98 format. If you
keep the project in this format, you may lose data for
incompatible features.

HELP!

Hi Karen,

I exchange files between teh two almost every day, no sweat.
Are you really, really, 100% sure your co-worker doesn't run 98? That would
namely explain absolutely everything including the messages.

Thank you for your help - I'm positive she's running
version 2000. I can't figure it out. Couldn't there
potentially be some problems if I save it as 98 when
created in 2003 just so she could open it? - Based on the
message I mentioned in the initial posting?
Thank you

Karen,
Although I tend to agree with Jan there may be a couple of other
possibilities. Is you co-worker using Project 2000 with the SR-1 update?
For that matter, does your version of Project 2003 have the latest
updates? I don't know if that would have any effect but it might be
worth looking into. Another thing to try is saving your Project 2003
file as a Project database. Then see if your co-worker can open it.
Maybe there is some corruption and saving as a database may just clear
it. You might also want to go to the MVP website at:
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm
and look at FAQ 43.

Hope this helps.
