Version of UML supported in VS.NET EA 2005

In the beta of Visual Studio for Enterprise Architects 2005, what version of
UML is supported in the Visio for Enterprise Architects 2005?

Does it support UML 2.0? Does it at least support up to UML 1.5?

Thanks, I can't find any documentation on this anywhere.

I believe I was told that it still supports 1.2.

My understanding is that there are no changes to the UML solution. There
are no plans to adopt a newer version of the standard.

Mark, thanks for the obituary. :-(

I find this extremely unfortunate. It was already the case that Microsoft
did not offer a serious UML solution (you can't possibly have thought
seriously that UML 1.2 constituted a solution). Now, however, it's clear
that there will never be a UML solution from Microsoft.

In more practical terms, this means that an MSDN Universal subscription will
never be adequate for me to produce UML diagrams for my clients, if they
specify UML. It's been bad enough providing them UML 1.2 plus an apology for
Microsoft Visio, but now it's clear that I'm just SOL.

An MSDN Universal Subscription used to be all you really needed in order to
do complete professional software development for the Microsoft platform. I
am saddened to see that coming to an end.

P.S. I hope somebody has mentioned to your product managers that there's
going to be a lot of talk about Microsoft doing an "embrace and extend", or
trying to push its customers away from UML and into the Class Diagrammer and
Team System.

http://www.sandrila.co.uk/

is an addon for Visio that will do all the UML2 diagram types.

Thanks for the feedback. I also find it unfortunate that Microsoft has not
been better at articulating a technology road map for Visio with regards to
the software development market. The fact is that the Visual Studio team
controls this part of the product, and UML does not mesh with their plans
for an integrated modeling and development platform for Windows. They will
ultimately be accountable to customers for their decisions to either embrace
existing practices or forge ahead with new ones.

Thank you, Mark, that was appreciated.

They simply must be thinking only of developers who are doing development
for their own organizations, with no external requirements on how
development is done. I, on the other hand, occasionally develop for clients
who require that I follow standard software development practices which, at
the moment, include UML.

And not MSUML. (U == Unique)

Hi John,

I have some questions, hope you can help me. My issue is that I also want to
model UML 2.0 diagrams, not 1.2. What do you think about the add-on from
www.sandrila.co.uk/ ?. Did it "magically" make Visio model UML 2.0 diagrams
as needed?

Do you know any other good modeling tool, that can model UML 2.0 diagrams?

Thanks in advance...

Joakim
