Versions 5 and 2002 compatibility

I have a user asking about compatibility between these 2
versions. I know it was after 5.0 that Microsoft bought
it. Can there be people with 5 and some with 2002 can work
and share files?

Microsoft acquired Visio after Visio 2000 was released, they then
re-released Visio 2000 with a few patches and with Microsoft branding.

When Visio 2000 was released the file format changed, but Visio 2000 was
able to save as the previous version (Visio 5). With Visio 2002 the file
format remained the same and Visio 2002 and Visio can save as Visio 5 or
Visio 2000/2002 format.

All versions of Visio can read any older version of Visio, but only save as
their own version or the previous file format version.

So, Visio 2002 can work with Visio 5, but whoever has Visio 2002 must do a
save as Visio 5.
