Vertically center images inline with text in a paragraph

I am sourcing material from an RTF document containing text and equations (as
images, not equation objects). There are too many equations to recreate them
all.

In Word, the equation images, which appear inline within the text flow of a
paragraph, are vertically aligned such that the bottom of each image is flush
with baseline of each line. This places most of the equation text much too
high relative to the line.

How can I alter the vertical alignment of these equation images so that they
are vertically centered on their respective lines while maintaining their
horizontal position within the text flow of the paragraph?

A typical use case is the following paragraph:

"Thus the instantaneous frequency of a sinusoid is obtained by
differentiating the phase. This is consistent with our usual concept of
frequency: if [EQUATION] then [EQUATION] according to equation 2.4 above."

Any help on this would be much appreciated.
