Very few options in "Style" drop-down

Hi,

If I open some work documents, and click on the "Style" drop-list button on
the toolbar, I have dozens of options, like "Body Text 2", and "1.1.1.
Heading 3".

However, if I create a new document locally based on my Normal.dot, the
entire list of options is:
Body Text
Default Paragraph Font
Heading 1
Heading 2
Heading 3
Normal

and whats more, the "Heading" options are all exactly alike.

Where did all the normal options go, and why can't I do the 1.1.1. style
headings by applyig a style to a line?

Only a few are listed in the beginning normal template. You can go to
Format --> Style and locate the one you want (or create one) and apply it -
and then it will be available in THAT document in the drop list. You can
move any of your style types via the ORGANIZER (found in the Style dialog
box) so they will be available in any new document based on the normal
template (be sure to say YES when prompted to save changes to normal doc
template.)

Hi Kate,

Actually, I've done something silly now. I used that Organiser to copy
various styles to Normal.dot as a test, but now I can't get rid of them.
Every time I try to delete a style, it says, "The built in style xxx cannot
be deleted"

How do I remove the styles I've added so that only the ones I need are
displayed?

From the style dialog or task pane, you can control which styles are
displayed. It could be simply that you have a restricted view.

You cannot delete built-in styles and they will display once you use them.
You could start again by renaming normal.dot, but see my previous reply.

The Styles list in all versions of Word displays "Styles in use." You can
force it to display all styles by pressing Shift while clicking on the
arrow. As you use styles, they will be added to the list.

When you want to remove styles from the list, you can delete them from the
"Styles in use" list in Format | Style. In the case of custom styles, this
actually deletes them. In the case of built-in styles, they are not really
deleted, just reset to the style of the default Normal template. You cannot
delete Normal, Default Paragraph Font, or any heading style that is "in use"
(only Headings 1-3 are displayed initially, but as you add others, they
become equally irremovable).

In Word 2002 and above, you can customize the Styles list by selecting the
Custom option at the bottom of the Styles and Formatting task pane. A dialog
opens that will allow you to select exactly which styles you want displayed.

I chose the "delete normal.dot" option and started again. I'm very happy
with the result.

I don't recall ever recommending that you *delete* normal.dot. It is always
better to *rename* it, so that you can extract customizations from the old
one.

Understood. I chose what you suggested to rename first, check the result,
and then I chose to delete the old renamed file. I shortened the whole thing
to "delete" to avoid confusion, a cunning plan that obviously failed ;o)
