Apparently each time I try to insert an external reference inside a
formula Excel quits ; I see nothing notably exceptionnal,, for
example the involved spreadsheets are rather small, about ten columns

How and from where is your data being inserted?

Have you updated XL to 10.1.5? If not, try updating from
