A couple possibilities come to mind...

A "new, improved" (or updated) network antivirus installation caused a
similar slow-down in one of my installations.

From your description, it almost sounds like the report definition you are
working on is located on the network. If you are working with a split
database, is the report definition in the front-end or the back-end?

Dear Jeff

Thank you for your reply. Herebelow is some more features of my problem.

My database file is on my local drive, c:\data\database.dbl
My Access 2003 is also on my local drive.

The problem comes when
My LAN connection is on
I entered Access, open the database file
Then I load a report and it response very slowly
I note the program is surfing over LAN looking for something as the network
icon in the right lower coner flashes, and when it stop flashing the program
response
Then I enter the report's design view to edit the report layout
Then for every keystroke typed I need to wait say 15 sec for a response and
the LAN icon flashes.
Then I close the Report
Then turn LAN off
Then I can never open the report file again.

Then I close the database file
And then close the Access program
When LAN is still off
I re-open the Access program
Open the database file
Go the report and load a report
The program response very speedy and the above problem is gong.

The above happens also to the Northwind sample database so that when LAN is
on, response is slow and the program repeatly surf the LAN, and when LAN is
off, problem gong.

The above still happens when I disable the Norton antivirus on my computer,
which suggest that the problem is not related to the antivirus program

Meantime the following background info might shed some light to the above
issue.

At the very beginning the database file is located on a Server
And I access the file, do editing, on my own old computer via LAN connection
(Access 2000 over Win98 Trad Chinese)
I purchased a new computer last weekend (WinXP installed Access 2003)
I move the database file to my new computer's local drive in order to have
direct access.
The above problem comes.

It appears that a BAD HABBIT is planted on my access programe that whenever
LAN is on it will surf the LAN first even the database file is located on the
local drive.

Grateful if you can help me out.

Best regards
Simon

If you open a new Access database, select Tools, Options ... one of your
settings tells Access where to start looking. Is there a chance that option
has been set to something on the LAN?

Dear Jeff

Thank you for your e-mail reply.

Have checked the settings under the option but unable to locate any settings
related to this issue.

I have un-install the Access 2003 and reinstall it again, same problem exist.

Same problem exist when I use Excel or Word but problem is much less
serious, as the problem only exist when I use network printer to print, and
the time need to wait is short.

I have another XP workstation with Access but there is no such problem.

Any suggestion ?

Hi Jeff

Just talked to Microsoft support staff in Hong Kong
They suggested that it is a Printer Driver issue
I am using Fuji Xerox Document Centre C240 ( a network color laser printer)
over LAN, which is set to be my default printer.

I am told to change the default printer to my local printer, with is HP
Laserjet 4L
I then open Access, open the database file, and open Report, the problem gong.

I then set another network printer - Sharp AR161 as my default printer,
the problem also doesn't exist.

I move back to Fuji Xerox as my default printer, the problem comes again.

Microsoft support person states that the Report calls for Printer drivers in
its layout so the problem might relate to printer, and he has got it right.

As my WinXP is SP2, which is the latest verson, I was suggested to download
the latest printer driver from Fuji Xerox (the printer was purchased for 2
years). It is done where the latest driver was issued in Oct 04. But after
instalation the problem still exist.

I go to Printer and Fax page, highlight the Fuji Xerox to look for property.
The response time is about 30 sec before the property sheet jumps out. I
appears this printer is not very happy with my new desktop.

As suggested by the Microsoft guy, I need to turn to Fuji Xerox for
assistance, as it appears to be the printer's problem.

Anyway thank you very much for your help on this issue.

Best regards
