VERY slow startup

I am also having VERY slow startup for Entourage 2008.

I am using 10.5.2, with 4GB RAM on a MacBook Pro.

The average startup time for Entourage 2008 is...110 seconds!!!!!

I must admit that my Database is really large!

After a quit of E-2008 (which often hangs... not good either, the startup time is reduced to 95!! secs.)

My fonts are managed by Suitcase Fusion 12.1.7 -- surely it should manage the font issue?

Thanks
Peter

Hmmm I'm not sure as this strikes me as way too long. Entourage takes
longer to start than say iCal but I'd say it takes maybe 15 seconds. I
have a Quickey that starts apps and I put a pause of 15 seconds to
allow Entourage to load before it loads the next app. However, my
database isn't that large. I keep it fairly lean by archiving items to
an archival identity after they've reached a certain age. I got used
to doing this in Outlook, which actually had a better archival system.

Thanks Kerry... I really do need to archive, but would it make such a difference?

I sure hope someone has a solution for me. I am seriously looking for an alternative now to Entourage. Too slow & the single database is too risky.

I saw Softhing's Entourage Email Archive X 4.0 advertized. (http://www.softhing.com/eeax/info.html)... does anyone know this product or have any other suggestions?

The fact that you're using Suitcase won't make a difference but if you
have a lot of fonts activated in Suitcase while Entourage is launching
then this can cause delays. The fewer active fonts you have the fast
Entourage will launch.

Hope this helps!

Well... tried a reboot and started Entourage 08, without Suitcase Fusion. This time it took 30 seconds LONGER... now 120 Secs.

I am really puzzled and frustrated.

And starting Suitcase after Entourage or other apps, means I need to close them and restart to have access to the Suitcase fonts!!!

Hmmm.

Any point in using the Activity monitor? Can it generate a report that'll help a tech person?

Hi Peter!

If you still suspect fonts then you might try running a font cache
cleaner such as Cocktail to see if it will improve startup times.

Since quitting Suitcase did not help then I suspect something else is
happening. Not sure what.

Not ried Cocktail yet, but DID update to the new Office 12.0.1.

It now takes 3 minutes!!!! 185 secs, to startup.

I am tearing out whats left of my hair.

To be honest, things got better with 12.0.1 on my Mac, but it still
takes ages to launch. 'Lot longuer than Office 2004 in any case and I do
know it's not a font or cache issue.

William...

just tried Cocktail, cleared the Caches etc, and this time it was even longer: 3'45"

There is something really rotten here.

Any suggestions how to pursue this? Does Microsoft itself know, and should I use my Paid Incident to try and report this?

Not surprising for a first launch since it then has to rebuild the font
cache.
I would guess that a new launch under the same sessions should be
considerably faster and if you reboot and try again, it should be a bit
longer than a second launch, yet still much faster then 3'45"

Corentin...

as predicted the 2nd launch under the same sessions was less, by 75 secs, that is it "onloy" took 2'30" to start up.

Still unacceptable!

Diane!
Leopard 10.5.2
MacBook Pro 2.4GHz/4GB RAM (Maxed out)
Microsoft Entourage 12.0.1
HD is 148GB; 35GB free
Installed on Boot Volume.
Number of other Apps open... varies, but has never caused this delay before. E2008 was supposed to have been faster, being natively coded.

Have yet to try the shift key launch or new user.

In case this helps, I just installed Suitcase Fusion 12.1.7 and
Entourage 12.0.1 slowed down considerably when launching. It used to
launch in roughly 10 seconds, and now it took two and a half minutes.
I'll play with it tomorrow after restarting the computer. Deactivating
fonts made the launch just slightly quicker, but not as quick as it
was before. I also turned off font Auto-Activation.

Entourage Email Archive X 4.0 is really good. I was using version 2,
and just upgraded to version 4 about a week ago.
Another option is Devon Think Pro Office, but the databases are
considerably larger.
With EEAX, I have over 20,000 emails in a 186MB database. Searching is
very fast.

Yeah, that's a big issue.
Any time you modify the activated fonts, Office has to rebuild the
entire font cache when any of its apps launches. I really wish MS had
chosen another scheme for the font cache.

Without a single other application open and plenty of memory space Entourage, Word & Excel take 10-15 mins for each program to open. Plus, 1/2 the time to get an email to send I have to close and reopen entourage otherwise I receive an error message. When using Microsoft 04 I did not have a single problem. Now that I have upgraded and experience nothing but problems I can not revert back because my Entourage emails are no longer compatible.

Any advice?

Then, I held down the OPTION key upon launching Entourage and REBUILT the database in the resulting utility window. THis has helped me before whenever things got wierd in Entourage.

Once that was done, which can take a while, I launched Entourage and did a major deletion of all emails older than three months. THat briought the database down to about 100mb from over 400mb.

Quite Entourage and relaunched...
This really sped it up, though it is still not as fast as Entourage 2004.

good luck!
