With ¿large? data source files, sometimes the application crashed. We
realized that if the option (Tools-->Options-->View) field codes was checked
then the combination (step 3 in mailmerge process) was succesful, but if this
option was not checked then when it was merging crashed. What is happening?
Is it a bug? Apparently this option shouldn't affect this way.
We are using Word 2003.

I must say, I can't recall ever running into this particular problem.

What is the data source? An Excel table? Something else?

By "large" data source file, do you mean lots of records, or lots of fields? How
many cause the problem?

Can you please be more specific about the actions causing the crash, and how
they relate to "Step 3"?

Large in this case is not about fields, but records. I put question marks
because
we usually have larger data files and it works properly. Those data files
are text files.
I see the crash during the merge process. The status bar indicates that it
processed 281 records or similar. Then appears the dialog box indicating the
crash.

I don't have any problem in sending the involved files, if somebody wants to
reproduce the error.

Very possibly, Word is experiencing a problem (possibly a timing issue) try to
lay out the page with the large record. If the field codes option is on, then
certain data won't be "previewed" during the merge process.
