Video in ppt 2003

I'm having a few problems with my Ppt presentations after
upgrading from ppt2000 to ppt2003

I have many presentations that contain video clips
(*.avi). These presentations work flawlessly in 2000 but
after upgrading to 2003 they appear as black squares. All
machines in the office that have 2000 can use the
presentation. All machines that have been upgraded
cannot. The finger of blame is pointing in one direction!!

I have checked codecs (they are indeo 5 BTW). Thats
definitely not the problem

I have checked the MCI registry settings (they are
correct) as in the link:

BUT in anycase powerpoint 2003 does not use the MCI
player (does it?). It uses windows media player. I know
this because if I turn off hardware acceleration in
windows media player (tools|options|performance|advanced)
the video clips play correctly... (it plays correctly
with hardware accel on if I open the clip in windows
media player directly.. its only through ppt 2003 that I
have the problem) but they rewind after showing despite
the rewind after playing option being off! D'oh!!

I've updated my video drivers and I've installed the
lastest office patch. Can anyone help with a solution? I
want my presentations back but I want to keep office 2003

Nick, I'm curious. If you go to Start/Run and type in mplay32.exe does
the AVI play there?

How big is the AVI? Can you send it to me? I'd like to see what happens
with it here. (Please don't post it to the newsgroup.)

Thanks for sending the sample file, Nick.

It actually works fine here in both PPT 2000 and in PPT 2003. Go figure.

I thought Geetesh's suggestion re Direct X might just do the trick. (I
have Direct X 9.0a here.)

A couple more questions -- what happens if you double-click the file
while you're in PPT's edit mode (normal view)? Also, which version of
Windows are you running?

Oh, yeah, and which version of Windows Media Player and which version of
the MCI Media Player (mplaye32.exe)?

And finally, are the video and the presentation files in the same
folder? And is it a long path or a short one? I ask this because we've
seen some odd things happen when the file path is more than 100-some odd
characters. I know it sounds odd, but if you put the presentation and
the AVI into a folder directly on your C drive, does it play then?

It works. No way! But at least I now know that it CAN
work!

Double clicking in edit mode gives the same black square
as in presentation mode

I'm using:
Windows XP Pro with service pack 1
Windows media player 9
MCI player 5.1 (build 2600)

I've got the latest graphics drivers. All the machines
here use ATI graphics cards, so I haven't tried with
another card. Mines a Radeon 9500 Pro BTW

Any ideas?

Heh, yeah, but I can't figure out why it won't work for you.

Only thing I can think of right now is to try using Windows Movie Maker
and resaving the AVI as a WMV. It's worth a shot. Movie Maker is a free
download for WindowsXP. It's available on the MS downloads page.

The movie maker WMV plays ok, no black squares.. but they
rewind after playing despite the rewind option being off.

It looks like I'm consigned to permanent powerpoint 2003
misery!!

I have had exactly the same problem....tried all you
experts suggested and am now stuck with running my
hardware acceleration at half the maximum level. All
works fine now!!!

Every driver is updated, everyupdate installed incl direct
X

That method seem sto give the same result as WMV, ie the
animation is visible but it rewinds regardless whether
the autoo rewind option is on or off.

I am looking into using animated GIFs instead. Does
anyone know whether there is a way to control when a GIF
starts to animate?
