Video plays white screen

Steve Howie posted "Powerpoint displays blank screen during videos" on
3/4/2005:
"In powerpoint XP, when I try to play a video file (insert, Movies and
Sounds), all I get is a white screen. There are no error messages and all
videos on this machine appear to act the same way. I've tried reinstalling
the codecs from the Microsoft site and Windows Media Player works fine.

Sometimes I can see a thin, black outline (vertically only) of the box that
should be playing the movie. Otherwise, no sound or video shows."

I have exactly the same problem.
Only my video wasn't corrected when I played it through mplay32.exe.
I've tried every suggestion by Sonia and Austin, including the very helpful
web sites suggested. All the way to regedit and codecs.

I copied the file to a laptop and it runs fine. Again everything from reg to
codecs and path length are identical between machines. Additionally this has
never happened before and there have been no resotore points or other
significant changes to either machine.

XPSP2, PP 2003. Insert, Movies and Sounds, Movie from File. It's a wmv
format video clip.

Any ideas left up a sleeve?

Thanks for all the help.

Have you tried moving the video file to C:\Test and relinking it in the
presentation?

It's not clear to me whether you are getting a white box instead of the video.

Have you tried the last tip on this page - I would be keen
to learn if it works or fails for my own information.

Sonia;
Yes, I've tried the C:\test but no luck.

Terry;
Your trick worked. The quality if the video is diminished somewhat - thin
horizontal lines that look like noise.

The big question is why does this trick work and nothing else?
It's very interesting that mplay32.exe works, all registry, codecs and
pathname are all good, but only saving from Movie Maker makes it play within
PP.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much, I was starting to think PP didn't like me anymore ;-)
