videos in PP for MAC

S

Steve Brinker

My wife works in marketing/market research using windows
equipment. A PPT presentation was put together (on windows
machine) and included in it are short videos of "groups". The
presentation plays on my wifes wintel machine, but a colleague of hers
is unable to play it on her MAC. I do not know what OS vs. the
colleague is using but believe that it is OS X. The imbedded videos do
show up as stills, but do not play as video. They are wmv files and she
has the wmv player for MAC installed. Should they play as videos or is
this feature not possible on PPT for MAC? If it is possible to play them,
are you able to provide directions to a site where instructions for
playing them can be found? Is the problem due to the wmv file. If so,
is there a file converter to change the wmv files to something that will
work?

Thanks in advance for whatever assistance you are able to provide.

Try and use AVI and MPEG files for maximum cross-platform compatibility.

Thank you for the quick reply. Are you aware of any written discussion
of these fileformats and their use with PP? Are the WMV files
convertable to AVI and MPEG? Are the WMV files better in some way?

Steve,

It's most likely that fact that the links to the video have broken.

When you insert a video clip in powerpoint, it creates a link to that file
e.g.

c:\presentations\thisiswhereIkeepmyVideos\

Which doesn't translate well to a mac.

In particular...

Sounds/Movies don't play, images disappear or links break when I move or email a presentation

To test to see if it is a broken link problem. Is it possible to open the video clips using the wmv player?

It's a question of cross-platform compatibility rather than just their use.
Using QT movies in PowerPoint:mac would make those presentations (rather the
movies) not playable on PowerPoint for Windows. Also, all Mac versions of
PowerPoint cannot play WMV.

AVI and MPEG can be played by all versions of PowerPoint on both OSs.

About converting WMV videos to AVI or MPEG, there are some programs that do
it on Windows - I'm not aware of a Mac program that converts WMV files to
AVI/MPEG.

When clicking to play clips there was a message that a particular link
could not be found and did I want to search manually.
