I'm not an expert in Vietnamese, so I wouldn't know if there were errors or
bugs. But choosing Vietnamese in the Input Menu, using a Unicode font like
Times New Roman, I can type any character in the Keyboard palette. Not only
are there a few characters already set with diacritics, but an almost entire
row of detached diacritics (top row) appear directly over any character
which you type immediately preceding. I'm sure that's how they're mean to
be, and most impressive. It's behaving similarly to the 5 special accents in
normal US keyboard which require the option key. But these don't need the
option key; you type an "e", say, then any one of the many diacritics in the
top row, and the diacritic appears directly over the "e". It seems to work
with any character whatsoever. It's pretty cool. But it would take someone
who knows Vietnamese to check it out for accuracy.

The problem is that Word cannot handle two combining diacritics at once,
which is essential for Vietnamese to indicate both vowel quality and
tone. They get smushed together. So the standard OS X Vietenamese
keyboard will not work correctly. Luckily Unicode includes codepoints
for all the Vietnamese characters in precomposed form. Word *can* do
Vietnamese if you make or download a "TCVN" keyboard that uses only
precomposed characters.
