View message without loading attachment

I have a slow modem connection at home and would like to be able to read the
whole message before deciding if I want to download the attachment, is that
possible?

As it is now, it seems outlook fetches the attachments before it displays
the message body.

In fact, attachments are part of the body of any mail message, so I can't
see how any POP client can download only a portion of a mail message.

What about IMAP? I have access to a webmail (Squirrelmail) to which I
connect; there I can read the message without downloading the attachment.

IMAP won't work either. You can download the headers and then mark the
items for which you want to download the remainer, but that will also be the
entire body of the mesage.

Webmail is different. The web server has the luxury of presenting the
message in any form it chooses and has already decoded the various pieces of
the message body when it presents them. In essence, it has "downloaded" and
rendered the message when it presents it to the web browser, just like
Outlook wil present the body and attachment as different pieces when it
presents it to you.
