View only deadlines in Calendar

Melissa

I have several tasks set up in my project that span several days in duration
but I have a finish date and for most a constraint date set up. I'd like to
view just the deadlines for each task in the calendar view. Is this
possible? I've been trying to filter, but cannot figure a way. Please help!

Hi Melissa,

Are the deadlines set on Milestone tasks? If so, you should be able
to filter for milestones. It's just for that reason that I usually
only set deadlines or constraints on milestone tasks. I can then
filter for milestones and show just those tasks. You can filter for
"tasks with fixed dates" to get constrained tasks or tasks with
deadlines, but you will see the entire task bar (start to finish)
instead of just the finish date.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

When I set the tasks as milestones, this is the view that I was trying to
get, however, but it looks like it changes the duration to 0 days and I
cannot go back to showing the tasks from start to finish. I figured out that
if I use the Task Information Advanced tab I can have a milestone with a
duration, but it doesn't work for deadlines only the calendar view.
Part of my problem is that I've had to tweak some things to get the gantt
chart to work how we want it. I'm working in a tax department and we're
trying to map out the return process. The duration of each task does not
depend on the number of resources we put on it and even if we say a task
takes 30 days, my resource may not be working on that task the entire 30
days, rather they are waiting for more data and working on another task.
For our managers we'd like to show the overlap of tasks. For ourselves,
we'd like just a calendar with the due dates. We we're hoping that we
wouldn't have to have two separate projects or use another program. We
currently have the deadline only calendar in excel, but we like how Project
makes it look better and also if we have changes we'd like to only have to
make it in one place.
Any suggestions? Thanks for your feedback and assistance.

Hi Melissa,

My comments are inline.

As a suggestion, instead of making your regular non-zero duration
tasks milestones through the Task Information form, how about
inserting a new task with zero duration as the successor to the
current tasks? Remove the constraint from the "regular" task and
set it on the milestone. Then you should be able to filter for
milestone tasks or filter for tasks with fixed dates or deadlines.

If you don't want the duration to change if you add or subtract
resources, turn off "Effort Driven" on the advanced tab of the task
information dialog box for that task.

[Julie]
Set the task as 30 days duration. Split your screen through using
Window > Split in the menu to show the task form at the lower pane.
Set the task as non-effort driven, and set the task type as fixed
duration. Assign your resources in the task form and enter the
estimated amount of work. Project will calculate the assignment
units required to perform the work spread out over 30 days.

Through filtering you should be able to have both the detailed plan
for the managers and a deadlines only plan for you. No need to
create two :)
