View page break lines

When opening a excel 97-2004 (.xls) file in Excel 2008 it is not possible to see the page break lines.

In Preferences Show page breaks is on and if I open a new wordbook it is possible to see the page break.

Do anyone have an idea of what to do with the old excel files?

When first opened in XL 2008 you need to use Page Setup, File> Print>
Preview or print the fie at least once for the break lines to be set.

Ok, it took me quite a bit of messing around to figure this out but maybe it will help someone else. I have an old spreadsheet that I converted to .xlsx format that I normally print a selected area of the sheet as 1 page wide by 4 pages tall. I used to let Excel set the initial page breaks and would then move them around manually (in Page Break Preview) to get the breaks where I really wanted them. Here's what I discovered using Excel for Mac 2008:

- if I've set Page Setup -> Scaling to "Fit to: x pages wide by y tall" then I CAN NOT see the page break lines in Normal View, no matter what the setting in Preferences (I'm assuming this is a BUG).

- if I've set the Scaling as above (1 wide by 4 tall) and then add page breaks in Page Layout View, the pages following the break DO NOT repaginate (again, I'm assuming this is a BUG).

- if I leave the Page Setup -> Scaling to "Adjust to: x % Normal Size", I CAN see the page breaks in Normal View and the pages break in the proper spots in Page Layout View.

- to get my document to print properly, I first select the columns and/or rows I want to print and then use File -> Print Area -> Set Print Area

- I then MANUALLY adjust the page breaks to get my 1 page wide by 4 pages high printout

- another problem: if I manually move a page break down (such that the rows above it will NOT all fit on a single page), Excel does NOT show me where that page break should optimally be but instead simply shrinks that page data so that it will fit on one page. The only problem with this is that you DO NOT KNOW it has shrunk the data until you either print the pages or preview the pages in the File -> Print dialog (i.e. you can't see that the page has shrunk in either Normal View or Page Layout View). And yet again, I consider this a BUG.

Good luck,

It's not a bug. It works this way in Normal View in XL04 (and WinXL
versions) as well. If scaling is set to "x by y", page breaks aren't
shown.
- if I've set the Scaling as above (1 wide by 4 tall) and then add page
breaks in Page Layout View, the pages following the break DO NOT repaginate
(again, I'm assuming this is a BUG).

Definitely not a bug. From XL08 help ("Fit a fixed size or number of
pages" topic):

Excel ignores manual page breaks when you use the Fit to option.
- if I leave the Page Setup -> Scaling to "Adjust to: x % Normal Size", I CAN
see the page breaks in Normal View and the pages break in the proper spots in
Page Layout View.

Yup. Just as it should be.
- to get my document to print properly, I first select the columns and/or
rows I want to print and then use File -> Print Area -> Set Print Area

You still should be able to use 1x4 to automatically generate the
printout, but you have to live with the automatic breaks.

- another problem: if I manually move a page break down (such that the rows
above it will NOT all fit on a single page), Excel does NOT show me where
that page break should optimally be but instead simply shrinks that page data

I'm not following what you're doing for this paragraph. What scale
settings are you using?
