View project progress

Hi,
I build my project plan on MSP 2007, and update it with actual work and cost
“progress†every two weeks then, save updates (not Save As) every time, is
there any way that I can view the status of the project “progress†(Gantt
Chart view) and what was the project look like say, one month or two months
ago without saving project versions under different files.

Advice is highly appreciated.

Hi Ammar,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

There is not a simple method for comparisons. Even if you Save As... to a
different name every month, the comparison between the two is not easy. If
you don't have a long project, you could re-save the baselines up to 9 times
in Project and then put the different baselines on the Tracking Gantt view.
To see how this is done, view the Tracking Gantt and Format/Bar Styles...
In the dialog, see how the baseline details are entered and then add
Baseline1 details underneath. I think you can get 4 lines for each bar.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

You could save it on a cyclic basis to the various baseline fields
(baseline 1, baseline 2 etc).

Partly the answer depends on what it is you want to see. If you have a
baseline, you can use the BCWS and BCWP fields and look at the schedule
variance for different status dates. Look up earned value if you want
to use this technique.

Thanks Mike and Dave.

In our company we have around 15 PMs, each one of then runs 3-6 short term
projects (3-12 months). For future use, our PMs need to save electronic
version of project status every month, this includes actual start, actual
finish and % complete of each task (Gantt View), so what happens now is that;
by the end of the year we will be having hundreds of project plan versions
(files) flooding our system, so, I wonder if, in some how, we can have only
one plan for each project that includes project status (start, finish and
%complete) throughout project implementation.

To save Baseline1,2,3,.. is a good solution, but still I can see the
progress line in the baseline Bar or % complete associated with that
particular Baseline, I went to Format/Bar Styles and select Progress line for
Baseline 1,2,3 as relevant but still it doesn’t work properly..

Thanks again
Ammar

You're welcome, Ammar :) However, I don't know of any other way of
including routine status. You might consider exporting the important data
to Excel where comparisons might be more simple.
