The latest Word Viewer will not work in Win98.
Where can I get Office Viewers that will work in Win98?

Is there an Excel 97-2000 viewer?

The latest version of Office (2003) won't install on Win 98, so I guess it's
no great surprise the Word 2003 viewer "doesn't work" on Win 98 either (and
the stated system requirements for the viewer say as much).

There is an Word 97-2000 viewer available:

System requirements for this file, WD97VW32.EXE, include Win 95 and Win 98.

Yes, I did.
Related Resources and Related Download Sites both point me to Excel Viewer
2003.
2003 means that it will not work in Win98.

Sorry, as far as I can see there is only one Excel viewer available through
Microsoft and it won't run on Win 98.

However, you could do a web search on "Excel viewer" and probably find an
older version that you could download from someone else's site. For
instance, the following all *appear* to have an older version available:

http://www.cmacademy.org/db2/visitor/ExcelViewerStudents.html
http://www.nkfd.org/Excel.html
http://www.american-abstract.com/GetDOVNoExcel.htm

I didn't look very hard, so I'm sure there are others.

* I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THESE SITES* I list them only as an example of what
a 2 minute websearch turned up for sites that *didn't* seem to link back to
Microsoft.com (because you can't use that one).
Exercise whatever caution that you normally would with any file downloaded
from an unknown source.

Poking around it looks like the "release date" of the application and
the operating systems it will work on are determined by whether the
operating system is currently supported. "Operating system support" for
Win98 SE expired in the middle of 2004 (see link) so I would not be
expecting much in the way of "new" software offerings for the Win98
platform from Microsoft.

That is one more OS that has been added to the "obsolete" list.
The DOSers and the Win3.xers have now accepted us Win9xers into their clubs.
When the next windows release comes out, WinXP will be added to the list.
By sheer numbers, we will out number you "modern" OS users.
Then we will take over!!!

geez, he's not looking for anything "new". He's simply looking for the free
viewers that have been readily available for years and years, but,
evidently, not any longer.

The current version of Word & Excel viewers will read Office 97 files....but
only if you have the hardware capable of running Office 2003. An older Word
viewer can still be found on the MS site, but not an older Excel viewer, as
far as I can tell.
