Viewing a picture rather than an object icon

We're using Word 2000.

Until recently when my colleague dragged a JPG thumbnail from folder
into a word doc, the picture was displayed.

Now when we drag and drop all that is displayed is a JPG icon.

I've tried playing with the Tools/Options but with no success. It's
probably blindingly obvious what we're doing wrong, but I'm missing it!
Any thoughts, please?

Try Tool--> options --> View.
Uncheck Picture Placeholders

Thanks, but this was one of the things we had tried, and the box is
already unchecked.
