Viewing Directories in Details

I am using Word 97 and Windows 98. I have six major
directories including My Documents. I have always used the
Details setting in the View button so I can switch between
listing the files alpha or chron. Recently these
directories came up blank. After the panic subsided I
found that I could still show each of these directories as
Large Icons, Small Icons or List. To cofound the issue, I
can still show the Recycle Bin and My Computer directories
in the Details view.
How can I get the Details view back in my other
directories?

Thanks for the good steer. When I got to the suggested
location, someone else had posted the exact same problem
on the same day and I was able to take the answer
immediately. I appreciate your help.
